Soapie Tropey Part II

One of the most tropey of soap opera tropes, Ms. Sugar and Spice is pretty much everything the ‘good girl’ should be: beautiful, sweet, can’t harm a fly, loyal, suffering gracefully throughout the series… The problem isn’t so much her niceness as it is her underdeveloped-ness of character. (See Chimamanda Adichie’s “The Feminine Mistake“)

If she was your friend in real life:
She’s the kindest, gentlest, most generous of your friends, but for some reason, terrible things keep happening to her: getting arrested for crimes she did not commit, being held at gunpoint by the evil character, almost dying… and you honestly can’t understand how anyone could be so unlucky. And also, she’s in a strange on off relationship with this rich guy who’s also being pursued by the evil character who keeps trying to harm Ms. Sugar and Spice.

Which brings me to the flip side of this character, if she was your friend. We’re not quite sure about her choices in men, or rather, this particular man. No guy can be worth all of that drama and danger, right? But maybe we later find ourselves in our own dramatic love situation and all of a sudden can empathize with her much more.

If she was our friend, we would probably tell her to consider dating someone else, but she wouldn’t listen to us (mostly because soap companies have to sell their product) so every Sunday we’d meet with her for brunch and she’d recap the story of how she and Alejandro almost ended up together that weekend, only for The Wicked Witch of The West to keep them apart for yet one more weekend.

Up Next: The Wicked Witch of the West.
